Pre-primary education

There are 102 nursery schools functioning under the Scheduled Caste Development Department to improve pre-primary education. These schools follow the LKG - UKG system and each student is allotted Rs. 5/per day for food, Rs.200 for uniform, and a lump sum grant of Rs.65/ to purchase study materials.

The Pre-primary education system is implemented through local self government bodies like Grama Panchayat, Municipality and Corporation.

Pre-Matric education

In Kerala, where school education is free the scheduled caste, scheduled tribe students are given a lump sum grant at the beginning of the academic year to buy study materials, dress etc.
Nursery school (LP Section) - Rs. 65/-
(1- 4th Standard) - Rs. 95/-
UP Section (5th to 7th Standard) - Rs. 155/-
High School Section (8th to 10th Standard) - Rs. 220/-

50% of the above amount is given as lump sum grant to a student who has failed and is studying in the same class for the consecutive year.

Students belonging to the communities Nayadi, Vedan, Vettuvan etc. that are amongst the most backward of the scheduled caste are given monthly stipend at the following rates as special incentive.

1 - 4th Std. - Rs. 35
5 - 7th Std. - Rs. 40
8 - 10th Std. - Rs. 45

Children of those who practice unclean occupations like scavengers, leather tannings etc. are given lump sum grant and monthly stipend at the following rates for pre- matric education.

Yearly lump sum grant - Rs. 500/-

Monthly stipend

1 - 4th Std. - Rs. 25/-
5 - 7th Std. - Rs. 40/-
8 - 10th Std. - Rs. 50/-

To avail this benefit a certificate regarding parent?s occupation from village officer or employer or Grama panchayat Secretary, along with written application should be submitted to the School authorities. This benefit can be availed by children belonging to all classes (Forward, Other Backward etc.)

Post matric Education
The Scheduled Caste/Other eligible caste students are given fee exemption, yearly lump sum grant and monthly stipend without income limits to pursue various courses after 10th standard. This concession can be availed at all institutes and for all courses approved by Government or University. The yearly lump sum grant varies for different courses.

The yearly lump sum grants

Students residing within 8 km from their institutions are given a stipend of Rs.270 per month and those residing outside 8 km are given Rs.315/ month. Those staying in college hostels or other recognised hostels are given actual boarding and food expenses and pocket money. For medical/engineering courses the pocket money in Rs.80/month and for other courses Rs.65/month.
