There are 17 large, and one medium scale industries in the district, of which, two are Central Government undertakings i.e., the Indian Rare Earths, Chavara and Parvathi Mills Ltd., Kollam.
In Thiruvananthapuram district there are 2 Central sector, 14 State sector, 1 co-operative sector, 4 joint sector and 60 private sector medium and large scale industries. The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) units employ 9262 people with an investment of Rs.34,394 lakhs (as on 31.03.2003). In 2002 there were 901 registered working factories. They include oil mills, cashew factories, cotton textiles, saw mills, printing units, rubber industrial units, chemical units, match factories, general engineering units and automobile workshops. In the light of the Industrial Policy 1998 and Information policy 1998 Government of Kerala have issued necessary orders streamlining the State Investment Subsidy Manual. The full text of the revised Manual as per G.O. (MS) No. 92/2000/ID, dated 11/7/2000 is as follows.
1. An investment subsidy of 10% limited to Rs. 5.00 lakhs will be payable on the fixed capital investment; of all industrial units set up in the State except those mentioned in para 6. For the purpose of this scheme an industrial unit eligible for State Investment Subsidy shall be an independent legal entity.
Objectives of the scheme is to encourage Small Scale Units to upgrade the level of technology or to use modern technology to increase productivity/increase quality of product by providing credit capital subsidy.

The Mission of the District Industries centre is industrial promotion with special emphasis on small Scale industrial sector, artisans involved in traditional Industrial sector such as hand loom, handicrafts etc. The District Industries Center also plays the role of facilitator and act as a promotional agency with simplified systems.
District Industries Center is the District Office located in each of the districts of Kerala, under the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Government of Kerala.
The mission is proposed to be achieved through the following functions:
Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board is a statutory body constituted by the act IX of 1957 of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The Board is vested with the responsibility of organising, promoting and developing Khadi and Village Industries in the State. It is the duty of the Board
* to start, encourage, assist and run Khadi and Village Industries,
* to conduct training centres to arrange for training, arrange for publicity and popularising of goods
* to arrange for the supply of raw materials to Khadi and village Industries and for the sale of their finished products
Master craftsmen who have distinguished themselves in any one or more of the traditional handicrafts of Kerala will be eligible for pension under these rules.
The income of the applicant from all sources shall not exceed Rs. 150/- per mensum
a) The applicant shall not be below 60 years of age on the date of application.
b) Age may be relaxed in the case of disabled craftsmen.
The applicant should have resided in Kerala State for a continuous period of not less than 10 years on the date of application
Kerala's traditional handicrafts varieties are a class of its own. The artisans of Kerala carves in wood, design in jewellery and makes idols in metal. The gifted artisans makes beautiful idols of Lord Krishna, Ganesh, Goddess Saraswathi, Lakshmi etc. in sandal wood ,elephants in rose wood and other art works in varieties of other woods.
The life size models of Kathakali and the models depicting boat race of Kerala are Kerala's own master pieces. The idols of Lord Nataraja in dancing pose and the various lamps (vilakku) which are very essential for every ceremonies of malayalees.
Kerala's Balaramapuram handloom sarees are well known for its simplicity, exquisite design and beauty. These traditional handloom saris are made out of the finest cotton yarn with intricate designs of golden jerry. Balaramapuram is also famous for its fine dothis and its traditional neryathu and the set mundu.
The coir industry, one of the major traditional industries in the State and second only to agriculture as a source of employment in Kerala, provides employment to around 4 lakh persons, of which 84% are women. With 10.05 lakh hectares under coconut cultivation, this accounts for 45% of the net cropped area in the State.
