Coir industry

The coir industry, one of the major traditional industries in the State and second only to agriculture as a source of employment in Kerala, provides employment to around 4 lakh persons, of which 84% are women. With 10.05 lakh hectares under coconut cultivation, this accounts for 45% of the net cropped area in the State.

Department of Industries and Commerce

The Industries Department is headed by the Hon'ble Minister (Industries). The administrative head of the Industries Department is the Principal Secretary (Industries & Commerce). The Directorate of Industries Department is located at Vikas Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram, is headed by the Director (Industries & Commerce). This is the functional arm of the Department implementing various industrial activities of the Departments. District Industries Centers are located in all district head quarters.

Educational Schemes for Scheduled Caste Development

Pre-primary education There are 102 nursery schools functioning under the Scheduled Caste Development Department to improve pre-primary education. These schools follow the LKG - UKG system and each student is allotted Rs. 5/per day for food, Rs.200 for uniform, and a lump sum grant of Rs.65/ to purchase study materials.
